Newscene is a Usenet provider that we decided to review as well. They currently do not offer a very high retention, a very high number of newsgroups or a free trial but they are still in business. They offer their users support by e-mail and they have a FAQ on their website. They do not offer a secure connection for any of their price plans but their speed is uncapped. Some of the competitors that we have featured on the home page offer up to 50 connections while Newscene only offers about 9 simultaneous connections from a server farm which is located in the United States. If you can already tell that this Usenet provider is not right for you, check out some of the competitors we have on our home page. If you are still curious as to what Newscence offers, keep reading this review.
Retention: They offer a 26 day retention for their binary newsgroups and a 45 day retention for all text newsgroups. Like we mentioned above, this is a lot lower than some of the competition that we have featured on our home page. Retention now should remain around 1, 000 days so you can see why this seems like such a low retention. Like some say however, do you really download information from over a year ago? If you do, this Usenet provider is probably not right for you.
Anonymity: Newscence does not offer a secure connection for any of their price plans. Not having SSL available can really harm your chances of staying in the Usenet race. Many users prefer to have a secure connection and if the option is not even there, this can turn them away. As well, even though it is unlikely, some Internet service providers limit your Usenet access during peak hours. Not having SSL available can actually cause your speed to be jeopardized.
Pricing:
They currently only offer monthly or month-to-month price plans. You are paying for how many Gigabytes you think you will need per month. The great thing is that you do not have to pay for speed or connections. Many Usenet providers actually make you pay for speed or even for SSL, this can really be a bother for users. They do not offer any unlimited accounts either. The only promotion they had available was multi-month but my advice is to try one month first as they do not have a free trial so you should test their service first.
Speed: They have one server farm located in the United States with up to 9 simultaneous connections. The speed is uncapped but they not offer any SSL. You should be able to max out your internet connection with this provider but we have seen much more connections and server farms. If you are looking for more, check out our home page for other Usenet providers.
Features:
- 53, 000 Newsgroups
- E-mail Support
- FAQ
- 99% Completion Rate
- Newsgroup Directory
Recommendation:
I would only recommend this Usenet provider to those of you who are not looking for SSL or a high retention as they do not offer these features. As well, be sure to check their online newsgroup directory before singing up to ensure that they have your favorite newsgroups available.
